Tool Room Machinist

Innovation and Technologies Reports to: Tool Room Foreman 1st Shift FLSA: Hourly

Summary of Position

Under the direction of the Tool Room Foreman, the successful candidate will set up and operate both CNC and manual tool room equipment including Mills, Lathes, Drill Presses, Grinders, and EDM machines. The candidate will perform routine mold maintenance, general repairs, and mold changeovers, and must accurately use and read tool room measuring devices.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Read blueprints, sketches, and drawings to determine dimensions and tolerances of a finished part.
  • Repeatably use and read scales, micrometers, calipers (dial or digital), gauge pins, and the optical comparator.
  • Choose the proper measurement devices to work at the tolerance required.
  • Perform manual machining on lathes, knee mills, drill presses, surface grinders, tool/cutter grinders, and saws.
  • Choose the proper machines, tools, and order of operations to achieve the part and tolerance necessary.
  • Efficiently set up machines and execute machining processes safely and on time.
  • Disassemble, clean, and reassemble tools during mold maintenance and changeovers.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Be flexible to work occasional weekend hours (Sat.) and assigned special projects as business warrants.

CNC Machining Skills (Preferred)

  • CNC experience using Hurco Machining Center, Lathe, Bridgeport Mill, and/or Charmilles Sinker EDM machines.
  • Experience with Fanuc conversational and G-code CNC controls.
  • CAM software experience — AutoDesk HSM currently utilized.
  • Ability to choose appropriate cutter tools, feeds, speeds, and user-programmed parameters.
  • Ability to square, secure, and set "zeros" on workpieces and cutters.

Minimum Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Associate's degree from a two-year college or technical school preferred.
  • 3 years of machinist experience (combination of school and experience considered).
  • Manufacturing environment experience with a proven track record preferred.
  • Comfortable using computers and required applications.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in-week and weekend overtime as business needs dictate.

Language & Math

  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals; write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
